Fishermen & the Sea

The fisheries sector in Lebanon is small scale and artisanal, with many fishermen today engaged in a family trade stretching back through generations. However, fish stocks are dwindling due to environmental, infrastructural and security issues. Overfishing is a critical contributor to the problem, and imported fish fulfill the majority of demand, leaving the majority of the Lebanese fishing community below the poverty line.

Over 8 years, SEAL has led a program to distribute strong, wide-mesh fishing nets along the entire Lebanese coast, supporting fishing communities while preventing the overfishing of fish that are not yet mature.
