Olive Harvesting Equipment in Matrit
Focus Area
Land & Agriculture
Local Partners
Municipality of Matrit
Budget
$19,320
Geographic Scope
Matrit, Koura, North Lebanon
Beneficiaries
50 farmers
Due to the high cost of olive production, olive oil producers in Koura are facing critical challenges. This important project aims to decrease the cost of production through improved harvesting techniques.

A harvesting operation typically represents between 30-50% of the oil’s cost, and since harvesting is done manually in Lebanon, the production rate is 50 - 60 kg per day. Although there are practices that growers use to increase their harvesting yield, they are often detrimental to the land, impeding on both the production and productivity levels by up to 80% [for subsequent years].

The requested machines are battery-operated mechanical harvesters, which means they are zero-emissions machines and are therefore environmentally friendly. They are usable across various terrains and orchard compositions-- and are uniquely designed to avoid damage to trees.

The municipality will benefit from horizontal linkages through trainings, where they will have the opportunity to meet, exchange experiences, and benefit from existing vertical linkages.

This project is estimated to increase production by 25% and double the farmers’ income.
